New viaduct connecting Zhuhai Airport T1, T2 to open in July
The approach bridges of the viaduct of Zhuhai (Jinwan) Airport's Terminal 1 were closed for demolition on Nov 21 after 27 years of operation.
A part of the construction of the Zhuhai Airport Comprehensive Transportation Hub project, the new viaduct will connect the airport's Terminal 1 with Terminal 2, which is still under construction. Upon operation, motorists will be able to access the two terminals directly from Jinhai East Road on the dual eight-lane viaduct.
A static cutting technique will be used to tear down the approach bridges' main structures, aiming to minimize the impacts of construction noise on airport passengers. Workers will set up brackets under the bridges in advance, cut them in pieces, and load the pieces on trucks that will transport them to designated areas for removal.
Of note, the viaduct and passenger drop-off platform on the second floor of the airport have also been closed since Nov 21. People who drive their own vehicles to the airport can park at Parking Lot 5 and then take the free shuttle bus to the terminal.
Meanwhile, passengers taking public transport can get off at the drop-off area in front of T1 and walk into the terminal.
