Tunnel linking Zhuhai FTZ, Nanping breaks through
Both sides were connected on July 20 on the Jiangjun Mt Tunnel, marking a significant milestone for the project's construction. Final touches like mechanical and electrical installation, fire prevention construction, and traffic safety facilities installation are now underway to ensure its opening in June 2023.
A major construction project of Guangdong Province, the Jiangjun Mt Tunnel is a component of Zhuhai's "Six Horizontal & 10 Vertical" skeleton road network and key part of the third Hengqin-bound passage.
The project stretches from Nanqin Road in the Zhuhai Free Trade Zone in the south to Zhuhai Avenue in Nanping Town in the north. The total tunnel length is 7,380 m (4.5 miles), among which the left line accounts for 3,645 m (2.3 miles).

The two-hole dual six-lane tunnel has a designated speed of 60 km/h (38 mph). Once operational, the travel distance between Zhuhai Free Trade Zone and Nanping Town will be shortened to less than 4 km (2.5 miles).
Constructor Zhuhai Da Heng Qin Development has to overcome difficulties like complicated construction environment, protection of high-voltage towers at the tunnel's entrance, and high risks of traversing beneath Zhuhai-Macao water supply pipelines.
Apart from the Jiangjun Mt Tunnel, the third roadway connection to Hengqin Island covers the Hengqin-Jiangjun Mt tunnels and Jiangjun Mt Tunnel-Xianghai Bridge sections. Upon completion, the three projects will form a vertical transportation artery, linking Hengqin Island and other transportation passages like the Xianghai Expressway and Zhuhai Avenue.
