Sun Yat-sen campus is to overlap Gangwan Ave by 2023
Gangwan Avenue will be made to tunnel under the Sun Yat-sen University Zhuhai campus between Daxue and Baipu roads in Tangjiawan. Construction is expected to begin later this year and be completed by the middle of 2023.
The goal is to separate north-south vehicular traffic from east-west cross-campus passage and further integrate academic disciplines, the Zhuhai Highway Affairs Center announced March 2.
The project will span 846 m (half a mile), including the 499-m (1/3rd mile) tunnel section. Planned are six lanes with a designed speed of 60 kmph (37 mph). Sidewalks and non-motor-vehicle lanes will line two sides. Above the tunnel will be two 5-m (16-ft) wide passages for emergency use.
Upon completion, the tunnel will be used by "social vehicles" and slow traffic. To reduce safety hazards, the Gangwan Avenue section will be restricted to teachers and students going between the west and east campuses, according to the Highway Affairs Center.
