Tunnel work gets underway to skip Lovers Ave hairpin
Construction of a tunnel under Haibin Park commenced Jan 20 to bypass heavy traffic along hairpin Lingjiaozui Curve and touristy scenic spots on Lovers Avenue in Jida.
Four lanes will run 960 m (1,050 yd) from Haibin Park in the north to the parking lot of the Haibin Beach (City Parlor) Service Center. Planned are 340 m (372 yd) of west and east tunnel passages and 300 m (328 yd) of south and 260-m (284-yd) north link roads.

The Lovers Avenue section between Love Post Office and Xianglu Bay Beach, which includes the Lingjiaozui Curve and passes the Fisher Maiden, is under great traffic pressure, especially during holidays. Still, motorists heading toward Yeli Island from Haibin Beach must continue to use busy Central Lovers Avenue until the project is completed next year.
The project will divert through-traffic from arterial roads to the tunnel, creating a coastal slow-traffic leisure space along the peninsular hairpin curve. Connection to Haibin Park, City Balcony, Xianglu Bay Beach, Haibin Beach, and Love Post Office will also be less troublesome.
In addition to the tunnel, a 260-m (284-yd) steel-structure pedestrian overpass, equipped with escalators, will cross Central Lovers Avenue from Haibin Park to Xianglu Bay Beach. And a 125-m (137-yd) east-west pedestrian trail will run through Haibin Park for mountain and sea views.
Xiangzhou Zhengfang Holdings is handling construction for the Zhuhai Highway Affairs Center.
