A new economic engine for the Greater Bay Area is nearing reality as five 100-billion-yuan ($15-billion each) industrial clusters appear in Zhuhai. The clusters encompass integrated circuits, biomedicine, new materials, new energy, and high-end printing equipment.

The goal was strongly supported in June at the 8th Session of the 9th Zhuhai Municipal People's Congress. Soon after, in Jinwan District, a plaque was unveiled for China Green New-Materials (Zhuhai) Industrial Park in the Gaolan Port Economic Zone where 15 new-materials projects valued at more than 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) had settled.

Xiangzhou District saw work on a biomedical complex begin in late September. Costing 1.3 billion yuan ($199 million), the facility is being constructed in the National Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone (Tangjiawan) Innovation Science & Technology Park of the Zhuhai Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is intended to become a highland for biomedical scientific and technological innovation and development. 

In Doumen District, 25 key projects came under construction Nov 5 to strengthen Fushan Industrial Park as a printed circuit board (PCB) industrial base with output value of more than 100 billion yuan ($15 billion) by 2025.

In support, Zhuhai released policies and measures to foster and attract leading enterprises. A 2020-35 action plan for a biomedicine industrial cluster producing more than 100 billion yuan in medical drugs had been released Aug 28 by the Zhuhai Industry & Information Technology Bureau.

This was followed by an Oct 23 announcement of a 10-billion-yuan ($1.5-billion) investment to support growth of the integrated circuit industry, industrial talent training, and intellectual property protection.

With all this progress already underway, booming strategic industries are confidently expected to bring the local modern industrial system to a new level and become a new economic engine in the Greater Bay Area.
