Public transportation carefully approaching normalcy

Zhuhai's public transport services have been largely restored with 190 bus routes serving commuters whereas taxis, trains, ferries, and planes are gradually adding passengers under anti-epidemic measures now firmly in place.

The Zhuhai Transport Bureau issued the status reports at an April 16 press conference related to pandemic prevention and control in public venues. It was said that another 10 bus routes will soon reopen. Daily passenger volume on buses is 600,000, or 60 percent of usual, and that of regular metered taxies is 90,000 (about 45 percent). Daily online-hailing taxi orders are now at 40 percent, according to Wei Yongmin, deputy director of the bureau.

Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity MRT trains have remained operational throughout the epidemic. So far, 39 pairs of trains, half the normal number, are running, with daily passenger volume averaging 11,000 (one-third of normal).

China Southern Airlines, Air China, and three other carriers at Zhuhai (Jinwan) Airport have resumed seven air routes to Hubei's Wuhan, Yichang, Shiyan, and Xiangyang cities. Daily departures and arrivals there were around 70 in early April and will climb to 75 by May.

All intracity airport shuttle buses, expect one to Chimelong International Ocean Tourist Resort, are back in service, as are intercity express lines other than those to Shunde, Hong Kong, Macao, and Yangjiang.

As of now, 16 Xiangzhou-island, 22 Jiuzhou-Shekou, two Jiuzhou-Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport, and six Hengqin-Dong'ao Island ferries are sailing again, joining the sightseeing trips Touring Around Zhuhai by Sea, Macao Cruise Tour, and that from Jiuzhou Port to Jiuzhou Island. The Shekou to islands, Gaolan to Hope Island, and Hong Kong-Macao-bound ferries remain docked.

Citywide coach depots, except for Kee Kwan in Gongbei, have resumed operation, and nationwide routes are open except for those to Wuhan.

Transport hubs and vehicles across the city have carried out all-round prevention and control steps including body temperature measurements, real-name registrations, health QR code scrutiny, passenger capacity limits, ventilation, and disinfection.

Since Feb 21, Zhuhai's disease control authorities have collected, from surfaces most exposed to people in 708 public venues across the city, 2,007 samples for nucleic acid tests, which all turned out to be negative. Examined were transport hubs, supermarkets, shopping malls, restaurants, medical institutions, hotels for centralized quarantine, residential communities, farmer markets, and public institutions.

Anyone going outside should continue to take preventative measures, however, and meanwhile keep social distance. Those with suspicious symptoms should seek immediate medical treatment, said Huang Yun, deputy director of the Zhuhai Health Bureau.
