Zhuhai has just been named a National Intellectual Property Demonstration City through May 2022 by the National Intellectual Property Administration in recognition of IP creation, application, and protection.

The city has carried out Regulations to Promote Scientific & Technological Innovation in the Zhuhai Special Economic Zone, Methods to Regulate a Specialized Fund for Patent Promotion in Zhuhai, and Methods to Regulate IP-pledged Financing Risk Compensation Funds in Zhuhai in accordance with socioeconomic development.

First-class domestic IP service resources have been brought in and modes of IP exchange and cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao explored relying upon the Hengqin International Intellectual Property Exchange (HIPEX). Founded in 2014, the platform is a pioneer in integrating online trading and the operation of IP with financial innovation.

Meanwhile, the city also innovatively put forth a Zhuhai model to help solve the financing difficulties of medium, small, and micro enterprises by pledging IP.

As of March 31, Zhuhai had recorded 83,048 patents, of which 12,633 are valid invention patents (up 37.9 percent year-on-year). The ownership of invention patents reached 66.8 per 10,000 persons, ranking 2nd in Guangdong Province.

Last year, Zhuhai garnered 27 WIPO-CNIPA Awards for Chinese Outstanding Patented Invention & Industrial Design. Five were Gold Awards, the highest in the country.   

The other six nominees were Shanghai's Pudong New Area, Yunnan's Kunming, Jiangsu's Yancheng, Zhejiang's Jinhua, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region's Nanning, and Tianjin's Binhai New Area.
