Brazilian passenger jet rather friendly to environment

Updated: 2018-11-12

Embraer's commercial jet E190-E2 made a mark at the 12th China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition for an environmentally friendly gear-driven turbofan GTF engine, which is remarkably low in fuel consumption, noise, and emissions.

At Airshow China in Zhuhai, the 114-seat single-aisle aircraft was considered the peak performing plane of its kind. Compared with the current generation E190, this one has a new design of over 75 percent of its systems, including the aero engine with an ultra-high bypass ratio, wings, and undercarriage

The E190-E2 gained certification of its type from the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), American Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in February before its first delivery on April 4.

The GTF engine by American United Technologies Corp subsidiary Pratt & Whitney Group is transforming the industry. It delivers a game-changing economic and environmental performance with revolutionary geared fan technology.

The engine currently is fitted to more than 50 Chinese planes at eight airlines, and altogether has powered over 175,000 flight hours.

Achievable is a 16 percent to 20 percent reduction in fuel consumption, which saves nearly 100 gallons of fuel and one cubic metric tons of carbon dioxide in each flight, according to P&W senior vice president Rick Deurloo.

This was the first time for the GTF engine to be exhibited at an itinerant exhibition in China, and it is to be emphatically promoted as a part of the A220-300 fleet displayed at A/S Air Baltic Corp.
