Foxconn selects Zhuhai for Greater Bay opportunities

Updated: 2018-08-20

The world's largest contract manufacturer, Taiwan-based Foxconn Technology Group, has established a partnership with the city of Zhuhai concerning new semiconductor-related enterprises.

Young Liu, general manager of Foxconn's semiconductor sub-group, signed a strategic partnership agreement with Zhuhai Mayor Yao Yisheng on Aug 16. Foxconn, however, has reportedly said it doesn't have plans to build a semiconductor plant in Zhuhai "at this time."

A main assembler of Apple's iPhone, Dell desktop computers, and Nintendo game consoles, Foxconn has accumulated extensive experience related to the semiconductor sector. Its involvement will serve Zhuhai's ambition to become a major semiconductor industrial base in the Greater Bay area.

The cooperation will focus on integrated circuitry, industrial internet, and high-performance chips for artificial intelligence and 5G networks where video streaming will reach an average quality level of 8K.

"It is hoped that Foxconn will seize the new opportunities for the development of Zhuhai, accelerate the strategic layout, promote the settlement of more industrial projects, and help Zhuhai's new round of development," it was stated. "Zhuhai will spare no effort to optimize the business environment and provide quality and efficient services for Foxconn development in Zhuhai."

Party Secretary Guo Yonghang, Foxconn founder and chairman Terry Guo, and Vice Mayors Wu Shi and Lu Xiaofeng attended the signing ceremony.
