Zhuhai forwards Europe-China Eco Cities Link

Updated: 2016-03-25

A jury assessed Zhuhai as a pilot city in the Europe-China Eco Cities Link (EC Link) project on March 21 and 22. Dirk Blink, head of the evaluation team, announced that he will closely monitor the progress of the Zhuhai project, and that the European Union will provide technical support and policy guidance.

Blink and Michel Prouzet, experts of AETS (European Application of Technology and Services), visited the Shangchong TOD (transit-oriented development) Green Eco Town project, as well as the Xikengwei Garbage Landfill ecological restoration and cement kiln technology project. After inspecting the Livable Zhuhai Exhibition Hall and Hengqin Urban Underground Utility Tunnel, the experts highly praised the construction of Zhuhai as a livable city.

A jury assigned by the EU assesses projects in Zhuhai on March 21 and 22.

During the meeting, project leaders in Zhuhai presented requirements for the pilot projects and cited progress and achievements. They also reported on the planning and construction of green architecture and aquatic environmental governance of the Qianshan River in Xiangzhou District.
Zhuhai has held 15 conferences and invited 49 experts from the EU to support 17 key projects on building an international livable city. These include the Qianshan River Green Architecture Demonstration Plot, Shangchong TOD Green Eco Town and the Xianglu Bay Beach Renovation project. Cooperating with EU’s top organizations such as Frey Architekten from Germany and Atkins from Britain, the first group of eight pilot projects has grown steadily in Zhuhai.
The two sides discussed progress and challenges. Zhuhai project leaders hoped the EC-Link would strengthen technical support, and organize a team of experts for detailed cooperation. Zhuhai also expects to learn more from further exchange opportunities with the advanced European cities.

Blink said he would closely follow the progress of the Zhuhai project and provide technical support from the EU.

The jury is a third-party organization assigned by the EU, with Zhuhai as the first assessment stop. Other pilot cities include Changzhou in Jiangsu Province and Weihai in Shandong Province. Based on the team’s appraisals of the pilot cities, the EU will develop the EC Link project.
