On November 23, Tianjin Yidecheng Traditional Medicine Shop welcomed Zhang Mingxuan, a student from Tianjin Foreign Studies University, and Lyno, an international student from Madagascar, as they embarked on a cultural journey to explore the rich traditions of Chinese nasal medicine. During their visit, they had the privilege of interviewing Ma Weidong, the sixth-generation inheritor of Yidecheng's intangible cultural heritage, to delve deeper into the history and significance of this ancient art.

During their visit, Zhang and Lyno were introduced to the unique world of nasal medicine, also known as snuff medicine. They learned that Yidecheng's nasal medicine craftsmanship was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2014, marking an important milestone in the preservation of traditional Chinese culture. Ma Weidong, who has been working in the pharmaceutical industry for over 40 years, shared his insights on the history and significance of nasal medicine.

According to Ma, the history of nasal medicine dates back to the pre-Qin period in China, with a long tradition of inhalation therapy using aromatic herbs. The introduction of tobacco to China in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties led to the creation of Chinese-style snuff, a blend of tobacco and aromatic herbs that has been preserved as a cultural heritage.

As the sixth-generation inheritor, Ma highlighted the importance of integrating intangible cultural heritage into modern life to ensure its enduring legacy. Under his stewardship, Yidecheng has actively showcased the traditional nasal medicine on the global stage. At international exhibitions in countries such as the United Kingdom, Russia, and South Africa, Yidecheng's products have been warmly received, particularly by those familiar with external treatments like snuff, reflexology, and acupuncture. Ma noted that while oral medications or infusions may face barriers abroad, external therapies hold broad appeal due to their non-invasive nature and cultural resonance.

A defining moment in Yidecheng's history came in 2018 when Ma presented its nasal medicine at the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee meeting in Mauritius. This marked the first time traditional Chinese medicine was highlighted at a formal United Nations event. It was a proud moment, showcasing not only the heritage of Yidecheng but also the immense potential of traditional medicine to contribute to global health and wellness.

The visit by Zhang and Lyno serves as a powerful testament to the enduring allure of traditional Chinese medicine. Guided by the dedication of custodians like Ma Weidong, the ancient culture of nasal medicine is not merely preserved but revitalized, poised to enrich lives worldwide. With each passing day, this heritage weaves its timeless legacy into the fabric of modernity, ensuring its beauty and wisdom endure for generations to come.
