Luban Workshop, a vocational education initiative pioneered by the city of Tianjin, has become a flagship model of China's collaboration with countries along the Belt and Road and, earlier this year, plans were announced for a second workshop in Kazakhstan.
In December 2023, Kazakhstan's first Luban Workshop, established by Tianjin Vocational Institute and D Serikbayev East Kazakhstan Technical University, officially opened. The workshop offers a transportation equipment and technology program, with specialized training in four areas: Vehicle maintenance, fuel vehicle systems, new energy vehicles and intelligent connected vehicles.

To address Kazakhstan's workforce needs, Tianjin Vocational Institute developed five tailored course standards, covering pure electric vehicle operation, electric vehicle equipment, automotive engines, advanced driving assistance systems and autonomous vehicle assembly technology. To date, more than 400 students have enrolled.
Leveraging Tianjin Vocational Institute's expertise in artificial intelligence, the new project will partner with LN Gumilyov Eurasian National University to provide education and technical training in information technology applications.
The new workshop aims to support Kazakhstan's AI industry by cultivating a skilled workforce, with construction already underway.
The Luban Workshop expansion further strengthens international vocational education cooperation, promoting innovative training and preparing talent for the future.
