As a national new energy resources industry's base, Tianjin has fostered a new industrial structure coordinating major fields of green battery, solar energy battery, and wind power generation.

The 14th Five-Year Plan(2021-25) is strategic for Tianjin to develop and strengthen new drivers and also key to build itself into “one base and three zones". The plan refers to Tianjin as an advanced manufacturing base and an international shipping core zone, model operational zone for financial innovation and pilot zone for reform and opening-up.

The new materials industry will be pivotal in developing an advanced manufacturing industry and thus Tianjin’s economy.

In the 13th Five-Year Plan(2016-20) period, the new materials industry expanded continuously, with competitive players gathering in clusters and achieving technological breakthroughs.

Traditional materials such as iron and steel, non-ferrous metals, and chemicals have been continuously improved to produce high-added-value products.

Materials for semiconductors, new energy batteries, high-performance fibers and composite are going hand in hand to support the innovative development of strategic emerging industries.

Tianjin has actively undertaken the innovation achievements of Beijing's new materials industry and made landmark innovation achievements in areas like graphene, additive manufacturing, and nanomaterials.

The municipal government has made it clear that it will work to boost the new materials industry and continuously increase policy support.

In 2025, the output value of the new materials industry will reach 240 billion yuan($37.73 billion), with an expected average annual growth rate of 8 percent.
