An establishment ceremony for the school of journalism and communication of Nankai University was held on October 17, the same day as the 102nd anniversary of the establishment of the university. This is the university’s first newly-established school since entering the new millennium. 

The founding of the school of journalism and communication is an important strategic move by Nankai University, as well as a key measure to fully push forward the construction of new liberal arts. Based on the advantage of comprehensive research done by Nankai University, the school will take the Marxist concept of news as a guide, orientate with the national strategy of in-depth media integration and play a more important role in training omnimedia talents in the new era, pushing ahead media integration and building an external communication discourse system.

Nankai University’s education in journalism and communication began in 1984. For many years, it has trained a number of journalism and communication workers for the country.

The school of journalism and communication is growing up in Nankai’s unique academic environment of paying equal attention to arts and sciences and the crossing and integration of disciplines, which gives it vigorous vitality and great potential for development.

"The establishment of the school of journalism and communication is an important strategic deployment of pushing forward the integrative development of traditional media and emerging media, which is a key step for Nankai University in terms of boosting its liberal arts,” Cao Xuetao, president of Nankai University, said in a speech at the establishment ceremony.

Ren Xianliang, president of the China Federation of Internet Societies, said today’s world is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century and we are in a crucial period for realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. The communication situation and communication pattern brought about by the information revolution marked by the internet are undergoing fundamental changes. Under this historical background, Nankai University is setting up the school of journalism and communication at the right time.

Li Xuyan, an academic at the Chinese Academy of Engineering and deputy head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Tianjin Municipal Committee, said the Publicity Department of the CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee will support the development of Nankai University’s school of journalism and communication as usual. Both sides will strengthen cooperation in resource coordination, discipline course setting, teaching staff training, teaching-practice-internship base construction and academic theory research.

Wang Yun, deputy head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Tianjin Municipal Committee, said society is facing unprecedented changes. Mobile internet has become the main channel of information communication and artificial intelligence has rebuilt the look of journalism and communication. At this crucial moment stepping toward the second century, the establishment of Nankai University’s school of journalism and communication takes on the responsibility and mission of the era. She hopes the school will stick to guidance by technology and train professional talents for journalism.
