In Tianjin, a highway network has taken shape with expressways as the skeleton, state and provincial trunk highways as the sub-skeleton, and rural roads as supplements. By the end of 2016, Tianjin's highway length reached 16,764 kilometers, including expressways of 1,208 km.
Tianjin will accelerate its rail transit construction, enhance public transport capacity, and improve intelligent traffic management system to strengthen its urban public traffic system to better serve the passengers. In 2016, the volume of bus passengers reached 199 million person times, increasing by 0.8 percent over 2015; the volume of subway passenger reached 277 million person times, up 7.8 percent year on year; 95 more bus routes were launched and 1,084 more buses were put in operation. Subway Line 6 was partially put in trial operation; the new subway length reached 28km, and the construction of metro lines 5, 4, 10 and the extension of Line 1 are forging ahead steadily. The Dabeihuan (North Ring) Railway and Southwest Ring Railway were almost completed, forming a north-south freight channel.
The Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway and its extension line, as well as the high-speed railways of Tianjin-Qinhuangdao, Tianjin-Baoding, and Beijing- Shanghai were opened to traffic, and the "one-hour traffic circle" connecting Beijing, Tianjin and Baoding is taking shape. The Beijing-Binhai and Beijing-Tangshan Intercity Railway had been approved by the National Development and Reform Commission and will start construction. The construction of Tianjin-Chengde Railway and Tianjin-Baoding-Xinzhou Railway has been incorporated into the national Medium-Term and Long-Term Railway Network Plan.
