Shanghai, in conjunction with Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, has emerged as a frontrunner in China's rapidly evolving coffee industry, collectively commanding half of the nation's takeaway coffee consumption, with Shanghai taking the lead, according to the 2024 China Urban Coffee Development Report.

This statistic underscores the significant influence of the region and Shanghai's pivotal role in fueling the burgeoning trend of on-the-go coffee consumption.

The insightful report, unveiled by the Shanghai Cultural and Creative Industry Promotion Association at the inauguration of the month-long Shanghai Hongqiao International Coffee Festival on May 9, sheds light on the remarkable transformation within China's coffee landscape. Notably, China has ascended from the 17th to the 7th position in coffee imports over the past year, indicating a surge in demand and interest in coffee culture.

The takeaway market of the coffee industry on the Chinese mainland has surpassed 20 billion yuan ($2.77 billion) in value, with Shanghai accounting for approximately 20 percent of total consumption. The report identifies the core demographic fueling this trend as individuals aged 20 to 30, with women playing a prominent role and exhibiting significant purchasing power.

A notable trend highlighted in the report is the increasing reliance on delivery services for morning coffee cravings, with takeaway coffee consumption during morning hours rising from 24.3 percent to 28.9 percent between 2020 and 2023. This shift underscores consumer preference for convenience and accessibility in satisfying their coffee needs.

In terms of flavor preferences, milk-based coffees like lattes have garnered substantial popularity, with the coconut latte emerging as a top choice among consumers. The ranking underscores the strong inclination towards rich and innovative milk-based coffee varieties among enthusiasts.
