Despite the impact of COVID-19, Shanghai Port is still the world's busiest container port in 2022, making it hold the title for 13 consecutive years, figures of the port showed.
Container throughput at the port exceeded 47.3 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2022, outnumbering all the other ports in the world, according to the port operator the Shanghai International Port (Group) Co Ltd.
Many new records were set in the past year, including a container throughput record for July by handling more than 4.3 million TEUs (in July), and the daily handling amount of 160,000 TEUs on Sept 8 and 170,000 TEUs on Sept 11.
Such progress cannot be made without the port's constant technological innovation, the integration with ports across the Yangtze River Delta region and the introduction of new businesses, the SIPG explained.
