Jinan, capital of East China's Shandong province, was ranked 15th on China's top 100 city list for 2021, which was released by the Shanghai-based Warton Economic Institute on May 21.

The list is based on the city's data in gross domestic product, household savings, and development in science, education, culture, healthcare and environmental protection.

A total of 13 cities were on the list. The other 12 are Qingdao, Yantai, Weifang, Dongying, Zibo, Weihai, Jining, Linyi, Binzhou, Tai'an, Dezhou, and Heze.

Jinan's GDP hit 1.01 trillion yuan ($156.73 billion) in 2020 and became a member of China's one-trillion-yuan GDP club.

From 2019 to 2020, Jinan achieved a GDP increase of 69.751 billion yuan, accounting for more than one third of the GDP increase of 206.15 billion yuan in Shandong during the period. Jinan has become an important engine driving the economic growth of the province.

Warton Economic Institute, founded in 1988 with approval from the Shanghai Municipal Government, is the first comprehensive research institute to focus on macroeconomics, regional economics and business development in China.
