An event focusing on cultural experiences and the sharing of textile techniques between China and Japan kicked off in Nantong, Jiangsu province on May 12, further deepening Sino-Japanese relations and showcasing the city's unique charm.

Sponsored by Nantong's foreign affairs office with support from the Consulate General of Japan in Shanghai, the event attracted more than 30 practitioners of Shen embroidery, a traditional Chinese technique in Nantong, inheritors of the Japanese Nishijin weaving craft and local residents through an array of online and onsite activities.

Pan Qiang, head of Nantong's foreign affairs office, said the city has maintained close economic and trade relations with Japan by relying on frequent cultural and personnel exchanges and a solid cooperation foundation, especially in such areas as culture, education, economy and sports.

Mai Maita, minister of information and culture of the Japanese Consulate in Shanghai, thanked Nantong's foreign affairs office for its strong support and care for Japanese companies and residents.

She said that Nishijin weaving and Shen embroidery are both treasures of traditional textile techniques, embodying the wisdom and hard work of generations of craftsmen. She expressed hope that the exchange will help Japan and Nantong expand their cultural exchanges and that both sides will hold more activities in the future.
