The retail and catering industries in Taixing, a county-level city administered by Taizhou in East China's Jiangsu province, experienced a strong rebound during the May Day holiday, with combined sales of 31.59 million yuan ($4.57 million).
This represented an increase of 31.66 percent year-on-year, as well as an increase of 20.3 percent compared with the same period in 2019.

Diverse promotion activities were held in shopping malls, supermarkets, and restaurants to drive the consumption boom. A minimum discount of 62 percent off was available at Gulou New World and Gulou Shopping Mall.
As a result, the clothing sales in the two shopping centers increased by 55 percent and 47 percent year-on-year, respectively.
Thanks to the rise of international gold prices and promotional activities, sales of gold increased by 65 percent and 62 percent year-on-year, respectively.
In addition, local residents conducted outdoor activities, such as camping and picnics, which drove the sales growth in sports clothing and outdoor equipment.
