Hefei sees resident growth and talent advantages in demographics

Hefei's population increased to 9.853 million in 2023, marking an increase of 219,000 from the previous year, with a growth rate of 2.3 percent. 

The city witnessed a consecutive rise in net population growth primarily attributed to migration, which accounted for over 91.8 percent of the increase.

The influx of newcomers also bolstered the city's workforce, with over 350,000 newly insured college students entering employment, showcasing a 16.7 percent year-on-year increase. This influx reflects Hefei's burgeoning appeal for talent and its commitment to nurturing skilled professionals.

The steady increase in college-educated settlers has paved the way for the city to fetch more talent. In 2023, there were over 180 researchers among 10,000 employed residents on average, twice as the nationwide mean value.

Moreover, Hefei's population profile underscores a positive trend in its demographic statistics. The city's natural population growth rate remained robust at 1.82 percent, outpacing national and provincial averages. This indicates a youthful demographic structure, promising for future development.

Urbanization continued its upward trajectory, with over 85 percent of Hefei's permanent residents now residing in urban areas. This urban shift, rising by 0.91 percentage points from the previous year, signifies ongoing urban development and infrastructure enhancements.

Hefei's significance within the province also grew, with its proportion of the total provincial population rising to 16.1 percent in 2023, a testament to its economic and social dynamism. Over the years, the city has steadily increased its share, reflecting its rising prominence.
