Hefei city-based group Anhui Wisdom Technology Co Ltd has signed an agreement with a wholly-owned unit of the China National Nuclear Corporation – under which they will expand R&D of accelerator-based boron neutron capture therapy, or BNCT equipment, to treat cancer.

Based in the Hefei National High-tech Industry Development Zone in Hefei  – capital of East China's Anhui province – Anhui Wisdom Technology develops artificial intelligence medical software and equipment core technology and manufactures high-quality radiotherapy products based on artificial intelligence and a special algorithm.

BNCT is a cancer-targeted therapy technology, where patients receive a boron-containing drug during treatment which targets and "marks" cancer cells.

When neutrons are applied, the boron in the cancer cells captures them and then produces alpha particles and Li ions that kill only the cancer cells, without damaging normal tissue.

It is said to be one of the most advanced cancer treatment methods in the world, especially effective in treating glioma, melanoma and recurrent head and neck tumors.

Anhui Wisdom Technology designed the radiotherapy planning system for CNNC Medical's BNCT and new linear accelerator, based on an adaptive radiotherapy planning system called DeepPlan.

DeepPlan is AI-based and uses the so-called Monte Carlo algorithm gold standard to intelligently outline and plan for fast online adaptive radiotherapy.
