'Snow screen' to display 1,000 sq m images at Winter Olympics venue
China's latest advanced display technology was used to create the "snow screen" that will display images at the National Ski Jumping Center, also known as the "Snow Ruyi", which is one of the venues at the upcoming 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games.
The surface of the snow is used as the screen with a projection display area that's over 1,000 square meters and will display promotional videos of Anhui province and other places in China before and after events, showcasing China's regional charms and development to the world.
One of the key projects for the high-tech-based Olympics, the display technology project uses two 100,000-lumen ultra-high-definition full-color laser projectors to deliver clear images onto the surface of the snow in the middle of a football field that is located at the end of the ski jump platform.
The projectors were developed by Fullcolor, a high-tech company in the Hefei National High-tech Industry Development Zone, and the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, capital of East China's Anhui province. Through joint research, they created a full-color display that can be used on large-scale complex surfaces such as white fluffy snow.
"Full-color laser projection has the advantages of a wider color gamut, higher brightness, healthy eye protection and low energy consumption, so it was adopted by the Winter Olympics to showcase the latest achievements of China's display technology," said Xu Lixin, chairman of Fullcolor.
According to Xu, the projection equipment worked well during current tests at the venue. It showed excellent performance by utilizing its key technologies such as ultra-high brightness, speckle suppression, and uniform illumination to create clear image quality and true colors on the snow's surface.
