Anhui Institute of Artificial Intelligence is a new type of R&D institution constructed and operated with reference to the standards for national laboratories.

Jointly initiated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Anhui province, the institute is supported and managed by the University of Science and Technology of China.

The institute makes the utmost of the innovation resources and talent advantages of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Anhui province in the field of artificial intelligence. In accordance with the plan to build Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center, it focuses on fundamental research, as well as basic research for application and technological innovation.

It is dedicated to promoting transformational and revolutionary breakthroughs in artificial intelligence theories, methods, tools, and systems. It is also striving to develop an effective mechanism for key technological breakthroughs and the application of sci-tech achievements, with the aim of leading the forefront of artificial intelligence disciplines and the direction of technological innovation, as well as shaping itself as a national-level laboratory.

It consists of the institute's headquarters and multiple joint research centers. It is located in Hefei National High-tech Industry Development Zone in Hefei, capital of East China's Anhui province.

The institute's headquarters is composed of six departments and one demonstration area: the Basic Platform Department, the Basic Research Department, the Strategic Cooperation Department, the Talent Training Department, the Achievement Incubation Department, the Management Service Department, and the Artificial Intelligence Application Demonstration Area.

The Basic Platform Department will include an experimental animal platform, a brain imaging platform, a computing data platform, a microelectronic processing platform, and a robotic processing platform.

The Basic Research Department will include a brain data laboratory, a brain function laboratory, a machine learning theory laboratory, an artificial intelligence algorithm laboratory, a smart chip laboratory, a smart computing system and software laboratory, a smart robot laboratory, as well as an artificial intelligence social science laboratory.
