Nie Jun, who graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), is a researcher working on monitoring and treating cyanobacteria at the Institute of Advanced Technology of USTC in Hefei National High-tech Industry Development Zone.

He has been committed to applying big data and artificial intelligence technology in cyanobacteria treatment research, participating in developing a water quality management platform for Chaohu Lake, one of the five largest freshwater lakes in China.

The platform established a database integrating data information from automatic monitoring stations, manual inspection, satellite remote sensing and video surveillance, as well as various hydrometeorological data from other resources.

Through the real-time images that the platform monitors, one can observe the cyanobacteria conditions of each river flowing to Chaohu Lake, as well as the flow rate, velocity, wind force, and pollution index.

The comprehensive information collected and analyzed by the platform provides support for the decision making of local related government departments, scientific institutes, as well as enterprises.

Nie said that he plans to add more data related to the water quality of Chaohu Lake, such as data about agriculture, transportation, and tourism, to the platform. He added that he will continue his work to provide scientific and efficient solutions to cyanobacteria treatment for freshwater lakes in China.
