At the end of 2012, the working and management committees of the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ) founded an advanced manufacturing industrial zone to further implement the "Industries Double Plan" and promote a "City-industry Integration and Urban-rural Integration" strategy.

The industrial zone was renamed the Smart Manufacturing Industrial Park in June 2022. With a total planned area of 52.25 square kilometers, the park is currently home to 3,731 enterprises, including 1362 industrial ones. Automakers and auto spare part providers contributed 75.3 percent of the park's output value in 2022.

In the previous year, the park achieved remarkable results, with industrial companies above a designated size contributing to a total output of 288.57 billion yuan ($40.69 billion), marking a 4.97 percent increase compared to the previous year. This output accounted for an impressive 83.3 percent of the park's overall output. Additionally, the park reported significant investments, including 17.21 billion yuan in fixed assets and 10.03 billion yuan in industrial investment. The park's attractiveness to investors was evident as 12 valuable projects worth 30.14 billion yuan found their homes within its premises.

As the largest manufacturing hub in Central China, the Smart Manufacturing Industrial Park has gathered six automakers, such as Dongfeng Honda, VOYAH, several home appliance manufacturers with long-standing reputations, such as Midea and Gree, and food, beverage, and biomedicine corporations.

The park boasts convenient transportation, and it only takes a drive of up to 40 minutes to reach nearby airports and railway stations.

In 2022, the park had addressed more than 230 operational problems of local companies and issued about 367 million yuan of funds, subsidies, and bonuses to 182 firms, beefing up their investment confidence.
