The inauguration ceremony for the nationally excellent engineering school of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) was held in Wuhan, Central China's Hubei province, on April 18. The school is the first of its kind in the province.

Last September, the State Council approved 10 universities, including HUST, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University and Chongqing University, as well as eight enterprises that are directly owned and managed by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, to set up nationally excellent engineering schools.

You Zheng and Li Yuanyuan, president and Party secretary of HUST; leaders from the Hubei and Wuhan governments; Liu Ziqing, secretary of the working committee of the Wuhan Economic & Technological Development Zone (WEDZ); Sun Jinsheng, president of the nationally excellent engineering school of China National Petroleum Co; and Lu Guoqing, chairman of CICT, were present at the inauguration ceremony.

This nationally excellent engineering school will focus on IC, smart manufacturing, key software, new materials, AI, cyberspace security, high-end medical equipment, aerospace, and aviation. It aims to cultivate patriotic, committed, and outstanding engineers that will serve regional development and national strategies.

Enterprises will decide various research projects for the students of the school to choose from. Students are allowed to have two supervisors (one from the university, and the other from an enterprise), and will then choose which research project he or she will do from the predetermined list. Meanwhile, they are required to have an internship experience of no less than a year.

After years of development, HUST has jointly established more than 160 research centers and nearly 400 talent cultivation bases outside of its campus, with major State-owned enterprises owned by the central government and leading corporations.
