China Lithium Battery Technology Co (CALB) is a domestic power cell pioneer. A ground-breaking ceremony for the third phase of construction on the CALB power cell and energy storage cell Wuhan base took place on June 12, with an investment of 8 billion yuan ($1.18 billion). After being completed in 2024, it will generate an additional 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in installed capacity of power batteries for new energy vehicles (NEVs).

The base is reportedly Wuhan's first large-scale NEV power cell project, and its first and second phases involve a total of 10 billion yuan. Agreements for the third and fourth phases of the base were signed in May this year. Annual output will be able to reach 50 GWh for at least 600,000 NEVs once the four phases are completed.

After less than one year of development, the first phase is now nearly ready for operation. The second phase was roofed on May 31 and will be ready for operation in 2023.

Representatives from Dongfeng, Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen, Lotus and Xpeng were also present at the event. "The launch of the base's third phase will further improve NEV industrial and supply chains, lower our costs and improve our products' competence," said Chen Ke, a senior official from Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen.
