Wuhan, capital city of Central China’s Hubei province, has been making great strides in its rollout of 5G, according to a report in the Changjiang Daily.
As one of China's first batch of the 50 5G pilot cities, Wuhan ranks third in terms of 5G rollout and ranks first among cities in central China.
Last year Wuhan implemented plans to add more than 2,000 5G base stations -- mainly covering areas within the second ring road and universities -- helping host venues for the seventh CISM Military World Games which was staged in the city.
In 2020, the city is expected to build more than 3,000 5G base stations to ensure 5G network coverage within the fourth ring road.
Local officials said the 5G network facilitated the successful hosting of the seventh CISM Military World Games running from Oct 18 to 27, 2019.
China Mobile (Wuhan) employed 5G technology to improve the audience's viewing experience. At the same time, based on 5G technology, it developed unmanned systems, connected car systems and VR face recognition systems based on drones, which improved the levels of service for the event.
Officials said 5G technology has also been applied in transportation in the city to great effect. Wuhan Tianhe International Airport has become the first airport in central China to boast full 5G network coverage.
Officials added that the application of the 5G network in the airport's internet of things, airport automation dispatching, artificial intelligence services, passenger services and baggage tracking has provided strong support for the airport to develop into a smart airport.
