Five international standards mainly formulated by China Information Communication Technologies Group Corporation (CICT), which is located in the East Lake High-tech Development Zone (also known as Optics Valley of China, or OVC), have been approved by the International Communication Union (ITU).

It took four years to establish these standards, according to Dai Jinyou, senior R&D manager of FiberHome, which is also located in OVC and owned by CICT. Two of the five international standards are related to networks and artificial intelligence.

The ITU is the United Nations' specialized agency for information and communication technologies, and standards issued by it enjoy a higher level of international recognition than those issued by other similar institutions. An international standard application cannot be approved until it wins the support of more than 200 member units of the ITU.

To date, CICT has guided formulation of 82 international standards, which have effectively expanded China's global influence in information technology.
