Wuhandong Railway Station will soon be put into use. It is expected to become a new landmark for the East Lake High-tech Development Zone (also known as Optics Valley of China, or OVC), and will be the fourth large railway station in Wuhan, with the other three being Wuhan Railway Station, Hankou Railway Station and Wuchang Railway Station.

The new railway station, located to the south of Gaoxin Avenue and the east of Guanggu Avenue, integrates services of both State and inter-city railways, subways, bus rapid transit and regular buses.

Its station buildings cover a total construction area of 26,000 square meters. Construction on station buildings and squares is now complete, and relevant officers from public security, transportation management, and the railway station have all moved into the railway station. Pandemic prevention and control drills are currently being held ahead of the official opening.

The interior design of the Wuhandong Railway Station contains distinct regional elements. The ceiling on the first floor of the waiting hall is shaped like a wave, which symbolizes the winding Yangtze River, while that of the second floor is modeled after the DNA structure, underlining one of OVC's pillar industries – biomedicine. The strip lights inside the hall represent the valley's advanced laser industry.

The railway station is estimated to serve about 22 million passengers per year, and will be a useful window for OVC to connect with the world.
