On the afternoon of June 5, more than 20 people were waiting in line in front of a community medical service station in the East Lake High-tech Development Zone (also known as Optics Valley of China, or OVC). Inside the station, Ji Yinglin, the only doctor there, was explaining the physical condition of a 7-year-old boy.

Ji and the six nurses at the station haven't taken a single day off since the Spring Festival. Ji serves about 100 outpatients every day, and usually goes to work an hour in advance. He doesn't get off work at a regular time, as it depends on the total number of outpatients, which varies from day to day.

Among the outpatients the station serves, 80 percent are children. "I enjoy my work. It isn't stressful,” said Ji, who is happy with the long-term friendships he has established with nearby residents.

Ji was born in the countryside and was eventually named president of a State-owned hospital in Huangshi city. In 2007, he chose to settle down in Wuhan and become a community doctor. As more and more people move into nearby communities, he gets busier and busier. Even people living up to 10 kilometers away from the station come to see him.

Ji's personal WeChat account is now publicly known among outpatients who need regular observation and further consultations. So far, he has had nearly 3,800 WeChat outpatients, and he continues to reply online to those in need. In addition, he has had a habit of watching medical videos and books at the beginning and end of every day for several decades.

Ji will turn 60 and retire in October. Many residents are reluctant to see him leave, although they know Ji deserves a break after years of hard work.

Ji has won many provincial and municipal honorary titles for his medical dedication, and his team has set up health records for 15,000 residents in OVC.
