The National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held a teleseminar on strengthening social governance in border areas in Beijing on Dec 20. Wang Huning, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, presided over the meeting.

Wang, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said that the governance of border areas is integral to the overall situation of Chinese modernization. The CPPCC should leverage its unique advantages and conduct in-depth research on major issues related to promoting high-quality development in border areas, as well as modernizing the governance system and capacity in border areas, he noted.

He called on CPPCC members to focus on the implementation of institutional and mechanism reforms in governance in border areas as outlined by the third plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, and promptly address new issues and provide suggestions for improving governance through proposals, inspections, surveys, reflecting social conditions and public opinion, and engaging with relevant communities.

Wang also called for accelerating the development of an independent  knowledge system for China's border studies, and strengthening theoretical research and publicity to effectively tell the stories of Chinese border governance in the new era.

He urged CPPCC members to participate in the "serving the people" initiative, visit grassroots communities and villages in border areas, and offer services to people of all ethnic groups.

Nine members of the CPPCC National Committee and two grassroots representatives spoke via video link from Beijing, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, Yunnan province, and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

They proposed accelerating the development of Party-led grassroots governance and political building, improving living and working conditions in border areas, refining a governance system based on joint contribution and shared benefits, improving border defense for social security and stability, and forging a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation.

Attending the meeting were Shi Taifeng, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, as well as CPPCC National Committee vice-chairpersons Hu Chunhua, Zhou Qiang, Bater, Chen Wu and He Baoxiang.

Officials from the Society Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, the National Ethnic Affairs Commission, and the Ministry of Public Security provided information and engaged in discussions with CPPCC members.
