Henan province had a bumper harvest of summer grain with an output of 38.13 billion kilograms, which marks a new record high to help with food security, according to Zhou Ji, deputy Party secretary of Henan province, also the spokesperson for delegation from Henan to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
Zhou said that for five consecutive years, the total grain output of Henan has exceeded 65 billion kilograms.
"We use one-sixteenth of the country's arable land to produce one-tenth of the country's grain and more than a quarter of the wheat," Zhou said. "We have not only solved the problem of feeding 100 million people, but also exported more than 30 billion kilograms of raw grain and finished products to other parts of the country every year."
He is confident that by early November the autumn planting will be fully completed and the sown area of wheat in Henan will exceed 5.67 million hectares.
According to Zhou, they have taken many measures to ensure food security including paying attention to the arable land and seeds, deeply cultivating both market and agricultural product processing, and simulating the farmers' enthusiasm of planting grains.
"We will continue to earnestly play the card of Henan grain production, speed up the construction of the core area of grain production in the new era and strive to put more high-quality "Henan grains" in the bowls of Chinese people," he said.
