Editor's note: Vice-Premier Han Zheng said no country will tolerate secessionism and terrorism, during his meeting with members of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee from Hong Kong over the weekend. He reassured that the proposed national security legislation for the special administrative region targets just a small fraction of people, such as those advocating Hong Kong independence. The proposed law serves to better safeguard the public's right to property, freedom and safety, Han said in Beijing. Following are the remarks made by Hong Kong members of the country's top political advisory body, the National Committee of the CPPCC, after the meeting.

"Vice-Premier Han Zheng has high expectations for the Hong Kong delegation to play a bigger role and for Hong Kong to take a bigger step in integrating into the development of the country. CPPCC members are urged to speak out more to help forge a social consensus on the national security law for Hong Kong."

Henry Tang Ying-yen

"Han expounded on the national security law for Hong Kong and explained with authority the background and purpose of the decision which was taken after careful consideration. He emphasized that the law would apply to only a small number of people, while safeguarding the business environment and people's livelihood by stopping the outbreak of violence that undermines social stability."

"Han asked CPPCC members to explain to the public the relevant concept of the National Security Law for Hong Kong. The central government highly values Hong Kong's rule of law, openness, financial markets, and talents. When political unrest is having an undesirable effect on these key factors and discourage mainland enterprises from coming to Hong Kong, it would impact the nation's external policy. Therefore, it is necessary to enact the law."

"Stalling legislation of the amendments is tantamount to helping murderers escape justice. The amendments are to safeguard Hong Kong's rule of law and public security. Opposition lawmakers should stop scaremongering."
