The role of sports is very important, as it relates to the physical health of people and development of the country.
But many challenges still exist. The function of sports in social, economic, political and many other sectors is not emphasized. Public awareness and participation in sports in China lags behind developed countries. The current management system for sports cannot meet the demand of social development, especially when building a socialist market economy and furthering reform and opening-up. That's why it's necessary to formulate sports law as soon as possible.
The law can help protect people's right to join sports events, specify responsibilities of different sports institutions and guide reform in the highly centralized management mechanism. The law will be an important part of the overall legislative work of a country, and be a measure of its management capability in sports. The International Olympic Committee evaluates the sports legislative system of potential host countries for the Olympic Games.
