Development itself is an ecological process. The evolving natural environment is the fundamental force behind social and economic development, which in turn drives changes in nature. They depend on each other, drive each other and at the same time constrain each other. 

Although there has yet to be a set of clearly defined concepts and indicators for environmental monitoring worldwide, I suggest that we take immediate action in this regard. Environmental monitoring stations can be built in representative locations following the overarching principle of maintaining harmony between society, the economy, ecology and development.
