President Zheng Nanning Visited the U.S.A. Substantial Achievements Accomplished
From May 6th to 11th,XJTU delegation led by President Zheng Nanning successfully visited University of Nebraska - Lincoln, UC Berkeley, Stanford University and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, LBNL with a series of substantial achievements.
The family banquet for President Zheng Nanning hosted by Prof. Lou, UNL. John Gale, Secretary of State of Nebraska, Harvey Perlman, Chancellor of UNL, Prem Paul, the Executive Vice Chancellor of UNL.
On May 5th, Professor Harvey Perlman, Chancellor of UNL met the XJTU delegation at Lincoln Airport. President Zheng Nanning and Chancellor Harvey Perlman held an interview and communicated in details. XJTU and UNL will collaborate in the fields of water resources and environment, biosystem engineering and food security, laser-assisted Nanoscience and law. Based on the success of the joint Confucius Institution, President Zheng Nanning and Chancellor Harvey Perlman agreed to strengthen the humanistic communication between XJTU and UNL and make further contributions to the Sino-US cultural exchange. XJTU delegation visited the UNL bioscience center and labs of energy system, laser-assisted nanometer engineering, water sciences and food security. XJTU delegation participated in the seminars with professors of related disciplines. They were also invited to the 2010 UNL Undergraduate Commencement.
President Zheng Nanning gave a speech at the Commencement ceremony and received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science from UNL.
University of Nebraska–Lincoln was chartered by the Legislature in 1869. 3 Nobel Prize Laureates are the UNL alumni. The disciplines of agricultural sciences and engineering, water sciences and environment, biology and food etc. come out top among the American Universities.
On the morning of May 9th, XJTU delegation visited UC Berkeley. President Zheng Nanning met Professor George Breslauer, the Executive Chancellor and Provost of UC Berkeley; Ronald Gronsky, Special Faculty Assistant to the Chancellor for International Relations and Dr. George Chu, the US President advisor. Briefly reviewed the fruitful long-term cooperation in the domain of engineering and material sciences, XJTU and UC Berkeley reached a consensus on the further collaboration and exchange. Formal cooperative agreements will be signed in the near future to promote the undergraduate exchange program, summer course project, graduate students joint cultivation, higher education research and XJTU visiting scholar program etc.
On the afternoon of May 9th, President Zheng Nanning met Professor John Etchemendy, the Executive Chancellor of Stanford University. They reviewed the rich achievements and cooperation in the realm of population research and social sciences since 1990. During the past two decades, more than 30 young staff and graduate students of Population and Development Studies from XJTU have been cultivated at Stanford University. The Complexity Science Research Center was co-established between the two universities. XJTU and Stanford University exchanged advice on the content of the to-be-signed cooperative memorandum. Both sides wished to further the collaboration in the fields of humanities, social sciences and environment science with a focus of the social problems of human society development and achieve more influential innovation.
On the morning of May 10th, XJTU delegation visited the prestigious Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, LBNL. President Zheng Nanning had an interview with Dr. Horst Simon, Executive Director of LBNL and discussed the substantial collaboration and joint research in the areas of clean energy, biotechnology, and nano-material. XJTU delegations were then shown around LBNL by Professor Andrew, the famous material expert.
During the visit in California, XJTU delegation met and communicated with the alumni studying at UC Berkeley and the alumni working in San Francisco. XJTU delegations to the US include: Professor Feng Zhenping,Dean of the School of Energy and Power Engineering; Professor Liu Jiankang, Dean of the School of Life Science and Technology; Professor Li Shuzhuo, Director of the Population and Development Institution; Dr. Liang Li, Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges and Dr. Jin Chunyang, Secretary of President Zheng Nanning.
