Shanghai is fostering an open, innovative, and inclusive intellectual property (IP) culture. This "Study IP in Shanghai" episode spotlights international students who study, live, and share real-world IP stories in the city.
Jointly produced by Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration and Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property, the short-video series aims to promote respect for knowledge, innovation-driven development, and fair competition across society.
Mpho Tumisang Gaaipone from Botswana is pursuing a master's degree in IP law at the academy, after completing undergraduate studies in Biological Science and Biotechnology, which shaped her interest in protecting scientific innovation.
She says Shanghai's curriculum closely integrates theory with practice, combining academic rigor with real-world relevance, while diverse classmates and interactive teaching formats foster cross-cultural dialogue on understanding, respecting, and protecting innovation.
Beyond classrooms, Shanghai's exhibitions and forums provided practical exposure, including visits to the Service Center for IPR Protection and Commercial Dispute Resolution at China International Import Expo, where she observed an efficient "one-stop" service for IP complaints.
Mpho believes IP is both a legal tool and a driver of global innovation, and hopes to bring her experience back to Botswana, helping young researchers turn laboratory ideas into solutions that reach international markets.
