Li Hongzhong, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and vice-chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, emphasized the need to focus on achieving the goals and tasks set by the CPC Central Committee for national food security during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30) and to promote the full and effective implementation of the Food Security Law.
He made the remarks while presiding over the second plenary meeting of the NPC Standing Committee's inspection team on the implementation of the Food Security Law in Beijing on Sept 24.
He pointed out that since the 18th National Congress of the CPC in 2012, the role of food security as an anchor for the country's high-quality economic and social development has been increasingly consolidated. Over the past two years after the law took effect, government departments and localities have conscientiously fulfilled their statutory responsibilities, and the implementation of the law has achieved initial results, he noted.
Li stressed the need to further enhance the political awareness of safeguarding national food security, advance the implementation of the Food Security Law and other relevant laws with a focus on key issues and critical links, and promote the resolution of prominent problems in food security governance in accordance with the law.
He also called for efforts to protect farmland and improve its quality, strengthen the system for agricultural disaster prevention, mitigation and relief, bolster sci-tech support for food security and protect the enthusiasm of local governments for grain production and of farmers for growing grain.
It is also important to advance law enforcement inspection and strengthen follow-up supervision so as to better leverage the important role of the rule of law in safeguarding national food security, he stressed.
Vice-chairpersons of the NPC Standing Committee Wu Weihua and Shohrat Zakir were also present.
