Combining storytelling and singing, a performance of Haimen folk songs, a national intangible cultural heritage item, took place at the National Centre for the Performing Arts on Nov 16.

The performance was led by Haimen folk songs inheritor Song Weixiang and began with the classic piece Little Sister Falls for the Boatman. New-generation performers took the stage with energy, blending the seasoned skills of veteran artists with the youthful vigor of the new generation.

To breathe new life into traditional folk songs, the performance team boldly innovated while maintaining the original rustic charm by adding piano accompaniment, creating a unique artistic fusion of local melodies and Western instruments.

After months of careful preparation, the event received widespread praise from the audience. Even international guests, despite the language barrier, were touched by the melodic tunes and sincere emotions.

Song Weixiang expressed the desire to revive the performance tradition in Haimen and promote it through school and community events, inspiring more young people to help preserve intangible cultural heritage and ensuring Haimen folk songs continue to shine brightly in the modern era.
