The Zhong Park renovation and the National Research Exhibition Hall construction in Nantong, Jiangsu province, is currently busy, striving to develop an open garden that exudes scholarly elegance.
Established in the 1920s by Nantong pioneer Zhang Jian (1853-1926), "Five Parks" highlight the distinctive regional features of Nantong. Situated at the southern tip of the scenic Haohe River, they are named after the four cardinal directions — East (Dong), West (Xi), South (Nan), North (Bei) — and the Central Park (Zhong Park). Connected by bridges, these parks form a picturesque landscape that harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding waters.
Currently, only Zhong Park is open to the public, and the renovated Zhong Park is planned to become a new attraction along the Haohe River.
The Zhong Park renovation and the construction of the National Research Exhibition Hall cover approximately 7,580 square meters. The project officially started in November 2024 and is expected to be finished in October 2025.
The project seeks to restore Zhong Park's historic look while preserving the memory of the Five Parks. It involves reconstructing historic structures such as the Kuixing Building and the distinctive I-shaped building complex. These efforts aim to rejuvenate the park's former splendor, restore its public and cultural significance, and uphold the enduring legacy of the Five Parks.
Once finished, Zhong Park will draw visitors with its scenic spots overlooking the Haohe River, a center for traditional Chinese studies, and exhibitions highlighting Nantong's leading scholars. The park is set to also feature beautiful courtyard gardens and serve as a versatile public space for activities suitable for people of all ages.
