The construction of the largest grain and oil transshipment base in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, located at Henggangsha operation area of Tongzhou district, Nantong, is nearing completion.

The 2.1-billion-yuan ($288.19 million) project started construction on May 26, 2023. It will feature one 100,000-metric-ton berth, one 30,000-ton berth, and seven 5,000-ton berths, along with 48 silos and two horizontal warehouses, offering a storage capacity of 448,000 tons. It will be capable of accommodating numerous imported and domestic grain vessels, with an annual throughput capacity of 11.8 million tons.

The project is expected to undergo final inspection by the end of June and begin operating in the third quarter of this year. It is expected to handle an annual grain transshipment volume of 5 to 6 million tons.

The base is set to provide transshipment services for grain and oil processing enterprises along the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River and inland waterways, driving the growth of a new grain and oil industrial ecosystem that integrates storage, processing, and trade.
