After the restoration of the western part of the Fenshui Island in Nantong in Jiangsu province was completed on May 12, the city has become home to a 7.2-kilometer-long ecological landscape belt, located along the Chongchuan section of the Tonglyv Canal.
The Tonglyv Canal, historically known as the Yunyan River, is part of the Yangtze River system. In the 1950s, governments at all levels redirected the original Yunyan and Chuanchang rivers, creating a new waterway. It was named the "Tonglyv Canal" because it stretched from Nantong to Lyvsizhu.
The Canal Cultural Plaza, along with other cultural landmarks, narrates the rich history and transformation of the Tonglyv Canal over the years. Vibrant flowers and plants now adorn the banks of the canal, transforming it into a new "urban green lung."
With cycling lanes and walking trails seamlessly integrated throughout the area, complemented by recreational facilities and fitness equipment, residents of all ages are benefiting.
In recent years, the municipal and district governments of Nantong city and Chongchuan district have collaborated to advance the development of the ecological landscape belt along the Chongchuan section.
The entire route now features a 5,366-meter cycling lane and leisure loop, along with distinctive children's play areas, basketball courts, soccer fields, fluorescent pathways, and solar-powered fitness trails, totaling 11,047 square meters of paved areas. Additionally, eight unique landscape leisure pergolas have been constructed, creating vibrant and inclusive recreational spaces for people of all ages.
