Communities across Wuxi are improving neighborhood spaces to make daily life more convenient. But as the city upgrades existing urban areas, greater attention is needed to accessibility, particularly for residents and people with disabilities.

Wuxi's urban renewal special plan from 2025 to 2035 identifies improving livability as one of seven priorities, aiming to create inclusive neighborhoods where essential services are within a 15-minute walk.

While previous improvements have targeted individual facilities, such as ramps, elevators and handrails, the next challenge is to make entire routes accessible, connecting homes with shops, parks and public transport.

However, various challenges remain. At Wudu Road in Xinwu district, audible pedestrian signals have been silenced following noise complaints, while electric bicycles often block wheelchair ramps. At the pedestrian overpass near Nanchan Temple in Liangxi district, escalators stop during rainy and snowy weather. Tactile paving for visually impaired pedestrians is also damaged or blocked in some areas.

Wuxi has nearly 100,000 registered residents with disabilities and more than 1.54 million residents aged 60 and above. The city launched a three-year accessibility improvement plan in 2024, alongside initiatives such as an accessible garden on Bogong Island and an accessibility map in its Lingxi app.

Experts say effective accessibility requires more than installing facilities. Better design, regular maintenance and input from people who rely on these facilities are equally important. Suggested measures include adjusting pedestrian signal volumes by time of day and installing barriers to prevent electric bicycles from using wheelchair ramps.

Ultimately, accessible neighborhoods benefit everyone, including older people, parents with strollers and those with temporary mobility difficulties. The goal is not simply to build accessible facilities, but to ensure they work in everyday life.
