With the approach of the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on June 10 this year, wooden boat-building yards in Zhuhong town – located in Xinghua city, in East China's Jiangsu province – have moved into high gear to make dragon boats.
Xinghua's traditional craft of making wooden boats was selected as an item of national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
The wooden boat building in Zhuhong town boasts a long and distinguished reputation, with its origins going way back to the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties.
In 2012, the Zhuhong Wooden Boat Cultural Industry Park was established and industry standards for production by wooden boat enterprises were uniformly enforced.
