Two super large container ships built by Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group Co Ltd were launched at the Taixing Yangzi Xinfu Shipyard – located in Taizhou city, in East China's Jiangsu province – on Oct 29.
The sister ships are the largest container ships ever built in the world.
They have a total length of 399.99 meters, a width of 61.3 meters and a deck area of 24,000 square meters, equivalent to 3.5 standard football fields. The maximum number of layers of containers can reach 25, equivalent to the height of 22 floors. Each of them can load 24,346 twenty-foot equivalent units or TEUs at a time.
The design team for the ships especially optimized the shape of their superstructures, effectively reducing their wind resistance. They have broken the record for the world's largest container ship capacity previously set at 230 TEUs.
In addition, the ships innovatively use an air lubrication system, which not only effectively reduces total energy consumption, but also reduces the corresponding total carbon emissions by 3-4 percent. The ships also use a shaft generator system to reduce fuel consumption, optimize EEDI energy efficiency indicators and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Another four these version of container ships will be delivered next year.
