These days fig planting in the modern agricultural park in Huangqiao town – in Taixing city, administered by Taizhou city in East China's Jiangsu province – is big business and it's bringing real prosperity to local farmers.
The fig fruit period lasts quite a long time, starting from July when it matures and the fruit can still be harvested in early November, with a yield of around 400 kilograms per mu (1 mu is equivalent to 0.07 hectares).
There are over 200 mu of figs planted in the modern agricultural park. "We recently sent more than 500 kg of figs to other regions per day and the price is now at 12-14 per kg," said fruit grower Hu Libin.
"At the early fruit period for figs, the price was 26-32 per kg and though the price has dropped now, production has increased," said fruit grower Yu Linhua.
The fig planting has helped local fruit growers increase their income, enabling them to make over 10,000 yuan per person during the whole harvest period, said local official Zhang Hongwei.
