The successful long-term management of rural river channels conducted by the Taizhou Medical High-tech Zone – also known as Gaogang district, located in Taizhou city, in East China's Jiangsu province – recently won a prize in the province.
That's because the district has continued to innovate in its river management methods, in a bid to create a waterway ecological environment with smooth rivers, clear water, green banks and beautiful scenery.
It has implemented a responsibility system that appoints two river leaders, 13 district river officials and 297 township river officials to conduct specific river management.
In total, they've solved over 2,000 difficult problems such as direct sewage discharges and black and malodorous water bodies.
In line with the national construction project of establishing "felicific rivers and lakes" – the word felicific means causing or intended to cause happiness – the district has invested over 1.1 billion yuan ($151.04 million) in promoting 106 such rivers.
It has also made continuous efforts to improve the management of riverbanks and has rectified over 280 river-related problems.
