Tong Mengqi, a cyclist from Huzhou, Zhejiang province, helped China win the women's team sprint title at the 2026 Tissot UCI Track World Championships in Shanghai on Oct 14.
Tong, Jiang Yulu and Yuan Liying beat Great Britain in the final with a time of 45.578 seconds. The victory marked China's first women's team sprint world title since 2015.
The result also marked Huzhou's first gold in a senior track cycling world championship.
Born in Changxing county, Huzhou, in 2003, Tong was admitted to the Changxing youth sports school in 2014 and initially trained in athletics. She switched to track cycling in 2017 after coaches recognized her speed and explosive power.
Tong has also won titles at the Asian Track Cycling Championships, a UCI Track World Cup event in Hong Kong, and China's national track cycling championships.
The world championships are being held at the Shanghai Velodrome from Oct 14 to 18, marking the first time the event has taken place on the Chinese mainland. A total of 22 world titles are being contested.
